Samsung Galaxy S9 review – specifications | features | prices

After the last year’s new arrival of iPhone X all the enthusiastic Android fans’ eyes are fixed on the South Korean firm to introduce its new member of Samsung Galaxy S series, the Galaxy S9. The official Galaxy S9 launch will be on 25th February in Barcelona for Mobile World Congress. It is said that pre-orders can be made starting on March 1 and will be officially released (most probably for the U.S. and/or South Korea) and shipped on March 16. And there are several hints that the larger Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus will launch alongside as it’s the trend of Galaxy S series to release dual flagship phones since Galaxy S6.

How is the new look and what is inside ?

Galaxy S9 will come with an aluminum frame and Gorilla glass 5 front and back. Display will be 5.8 inches (85.4 cm2) capacitive touchscreen with Super AMOLED technology and 16M colors. And multitouch will be available.  Resolution is 1440 x 2960 pixels with 18.5: 9 ratio and 568 PPI.

You will see two variations of Chipset depending on where in the world you are. US buyers are announced to get Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 while the rest will get Samsung’s own Exynos 9810. Both Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus will have Octa Core chip with four cores running at 2.8GHz and four at 1.8GHz. Previously Samsung has revealed that “Exynos 9810 has 3rd generation custom CPU cores, Upgraded GPU, and gigabit LTE modem with industry first 6CA support”. So if your network is capable, it supports up to 1.2Gbps download speed which is remarkably faster than the Galaxy S8.  When it comes to Memory, it will have 4 GB RAM with 64 GB internal storage and expandable memory up to 256 GB with micro SD (uses SIM 2 slot). Android 8.0 (Oreo) will be the OS for Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus.

There’s a sad news for those expected a longer battery life. Galaxy S9 comes with a Non-removable Li-Ion 3000 mAh battery (11.55 Wh) which is same as the S8. You can hear the same old rumor of getting a new color option; Purple alongside the black, blue and gold colors. We just hope it won’t just be a rumor like last time as before the arrival of Samsung Galaxy S8.

Connectivity options are said to include;

  • WLAN – Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, dual-band, Wi-Fi Direct, hotspot
  • GPS – with A-GPS, GLONASS, BDS, GALILEO
  • Bluetooth – 5.0, A2DP, LE, aptX
  • NFC (Near-field communication)
  • USB – 3.1, Type-C 1.0 reversible connector
  • 3G and 4G.

It will be a Dual SIM phone though it is not confirmed yet. If it is both will be Nano SIMs with 4G/LTE. We can expect Compass Magnetometer, Proximity sensor, Accelerometer, Ambient light sensor, Gyroscope, Iris scanner, fingerprint (rear-mounted), barometer, heart rate and etc. as the sensors included in Galaxy S9. It will have a 3.5mm jack and 32-bit/384kHz audio. Active noise cancellation with dedicated mic.

What is new with Samsung Galaxy S9 ?

Improvement of the iris scanner is one of the hottest news about the Galaxy S9. It would be smarter, faster and better than Galaxy S8. It will be boosted up to 3MP which may provide a better recognition even with poor lighting. AKG stereo speakers and a free set of Bluetooth AKG headphones another rumor about Galaxy S9 that came up with some promising evidence.

According to a most recent design leak the rear fingerprint scanner appears to be repositioned. It might have a 3D sensor front camera. There aren’t any information to backup what it really is, but it sounds similar to the iPhone X’s Face ID system that uses facial recognition to unlock the phone. Though it uses the same 3000 mAh battery as the Galaxy S8 the efficiency improvements in the new chipsets would help the battery to last longer.

Super Cameras on the way

Samsung Galaxy S9 will come with a 12 MP (f/1.5, 26mm, 1/2.5″, 1.4 µm, Dual Pixel PDAF), phase detection autofocus, OIS, LED flash primary camera.it may feature Geo-tagging, simultaneous 4K video and 9MP image recording, touch focus, face/smile detection, Auto HDR and panorama. It will be able to o record video at 30 frames per second in 2160p and at 60 frames per second in 1080p. The Secondary camera will be 8 MP, f/1.6, autofocus, 1440p, dual video call, and Auto HDR.

Other Features

SMS (threaded view), MMS, Email, Push Mail, IM will be used for messaging while the browser will come with HTML5. And the other expected features are Samsung desktop experience support, Fast battery charging, wireless charging, ANT+ support, Bixby natural language commands and dictation, video player (MP4/DivX/XviD/H.265), audio player (MP3/WAV/eAAC+/FLAC), Photo/video editor and Document editor.

Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus

The larger sibling of Galaxy S9 will have a bigger screen (6.2 inches) as expected and more battery life (3500 mAh) than the Galaxy S9.  And it rumored to have a new dual lens camera.  It may come in a dual-SIM version. Galaxy S9 Plus will have 2x optical zoom. And the other differences from Galaxy S9 are 6 GB RAM and 128 GB Storage.

What would be the price of Galaxy S9 ?

Galaxy S8 was launched at $720. According to the reports from several resources the Galaxy S9 would cost around $850 and $900, which is same to last year’s Galaxy S8 Plus. Though with the price hike it will still cost less than its main competitor iPhone X.

What are the pros and cons compared to the competitors ?

As said above, price is ironically a pro when compared to iPhone X. Though it’s a reported fact that Samsung supplied the panel that Apple uses it has a drastic difference compared to Galaxy S8. So we expect that Galaxy S9 will become the king of OLED by providing a better display with wider viewing angles and more natural-looking hues.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 and Exynos 9810 has its own set of pros and cons. Galaxy S9 can’t be faster than iPhone X but it comes with a 30 percent graphic boost and faster gigabit LTE connectivity. Another pro is the longer battery life. If Galaxy S9 want to be a challenging competitor it needs that AI UX that has been a rumored to be developed by Samsung rather than Bixby, the AI assistant that came with previous Galaxy series phones.

Let us see will Galaxy S9 would be any help to held Samsung the best Android phone title and be a challenging competitor to iPhone X.
